The ION hotel in Iceland is a member of Design Hotels and has set the bar for a luxury hotel in the country. ION hotel, although a newcomer, has very much planted itself into the genre of luxury hospitality and it’s arrival certainly has not gone unnoticed. Receiver of 12 accolades in only 3 years it is making headways in the honeymoon market and sustainability resorts, having won both ‘Best Honeymoon Boutique Hotel in Europe’ and ‘The Most Sustainable Boutique Hotel in Europe’.

Leaving Reykjavik only an hour behind, you arrive at the hotel with a backdrop of mountainous lava fields. In ION’s own words the hotel is set to, ‘inspire, revitalize and allow guests to escape the mundane’.

ION hotel, owned by Sigurlaug Sverrisdottir, houses 45 rooms. Guests enjoy a delightful outdoor geothermal heated 10 metre hot tub and Silfra restaurant. The restaurant serves modern Nordic cuisine and is alongside the Northern Lights Bar. A fabulous venue from which to enjoy the incredible night sky of Iceland and the Northern lights if and when they make an appearance. The rooms also feature Soley Organic amenities, made from locally sourced herbs.

If you are an outdoors couple then this hotel is fantastic for you as it offers hot springs and the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site, Thingvellir National Park. Here you can truly experience what Iceland has to offer, from hiking, swimming, diving in the Silfra fissure, horse-riding, helicopter tours of the island and its stunning glaciers.

ION didn’t win its sustainability award for nothing. Guests relax amongst the hot springs that provide the resort with its energy and hot water and where possible products used in the hotel are locally sourced. The rooms feature driftwood, tires and other natural materials to provide a beautiful, clean interior design.

If you’re in need of a relaxing break that’s only a short hop away, head over to ION and Iceland. The luxury hotel and its country is a marvellous spectacle.
