Honest Burger was born 5 years ago after Tom and Phil met in Brighton. After initially establishing their brand of good quality produce burgers at festivals and shows, they opened a small unit in Brixton in 2011. That initial small unit has started a successful business that is going from strength to strength and producing delicious burgers.

Hero & Leander visited the new Honest Burger branch near Old Street. This is the brand’s 10th restaurant and we’re sure that with the success the company is currently experiencing, could spread further afield than London. The new restaurant is in a hugely exiting area of London right now, moments away from London’s ‘silicon roundabout’. The restaurant is part of a larger commercial development and this will surely ensure that the venue becomes an exciting and frequented eatery.

We were greeted by the waitress and manager with a warm friendliness, coming in from the cold autumn London evening. After being shown to our booth we had to make the difficult decision, that of which delicious drink to commence the evening with. One Botanic Garden cocktail (Blackwoods gin, apple, elderflower, lime) and a Mint Lemonade later we were hugely excited about the arrival of our burgers. The Chicken Burger (free range chicken, lettuce, tomato and mustard mayonnaise) and the latest Special from Honest (beef, brindisa chorizo, honest chimichurri, manchego and jalapeño puree) jumped off the menu to us and there was no second guessing our appetites. The meal was accompanied with a delicious side of onion rings and chipotle mayonnaise that we simply couldn’t have enough of. Both the beef and the chicken are sumptuous in their texture and the burgers have just the right amount of sauce and cheese to go with them. Far too often, burger joints are guilty of overloading the bun, only for it fall apart on you. Honest Burger simply knows how to put together a burger. Not only this but the service of the food and drinks was so friendly and accommodating, something that is so often missing.

All in all Honest Burger is a delight and a refreshing change on London’s burger scene.

After our delicious meal we spoke with Tom the co-owner of Honest Burger;

H&L:

What were you doing prior to setting up Honest Burger and how did this prepare you for entering the competitive restaurant industry?

Tom:

Both Philip and I were working in the industry. I was a barman and Phil was climbing the ladder, he was actually my boss when I left the restaurant we worked in! Although it gave us both valuable industry experience, we learnt more about each others work ethics.

H&L:

We’ve recently come back from a tour of the States, where the burgers are simply fantastic. Do you draw influences from anywhere specific?

Tom:

We’ve both eaten burgers in the States and they’re almost (!) in a league of their own. When we created Honest the American style burger was already quite established in London so we felt very strongly about deviating from it and coming up with our own style.

H&L:

What was it specifically that drew you to opening up a branch at Old Street over other areas in London?

Tom:

Old Street has been on our radar since the regeneration of the tube station place. We were just waiting for a site that would work for us.

H&L:

What are your favourite items on the menu and do you have any up and coming surprises that we can have a sneaky word about?

Tom:

My favourite will always be the Honest Burger, but we’ve had some very interesting specials on the menu over the years and we’ve got some great ones lined up for next year. I cant say more than that!

H&L:

As a member of the public can I hire out your venues for private parties?

Tom:

We have a small area that’s bookable in our Liverpool Street restaurant but in general we operate a no bookings policy. Instead we have a live queue tracker system that you can follow if we’re full upon your arrival.

H&L:

What’s next for Honest Burger and you guys?

Tom:

We’ve got a big year ahead. A few more sites and possibly our first venture outside of London

We’ll be watching with a close eye on Honest Burger’s exciting development throughout 2016. Make sure you check out your closest venue for a great dinner and catch up with friends.
