When the weather’s gloomy, cold and grey sometimes all you need is a little pick-me-up to brighten the mood. And nothing brightens the mood like a comforting plate of food. So with this in mind, we made our way to Greenwood- a pub, restaurant and sports lounge all rolled into one!
Conveniently located opposite Victoria station, we dashed across the road and within 30 seconds were out of the rain and into the raucousness of Greenwood. It was a Thursday night and anyone who has ever lived or worked in London knows that Thursday is the night to be out. We followed the waitress past crowds of rowdy city workers letting their hair down for the night. The atmosphere was electric. Music was pumping and every screen (and there were many) had a different sport playing. This wasn’t a romantic date night; in fact at no point in the evening did it even cross my mind that it was a date. It was just a couple in need of good food and a lively atmosphere- and Greenwood delivered.
We were seated at a table on a raised platform overlooking the main bar area which was the perfect vantage point for people watching! The space was vast and yet the urban bistro décor, lively crowd and music made it feel much more intimate. With ‘mood brightening’ on the agenda we immediately reached for the cocktail menu. A Brit Spritz was my drink of choice; Kamm & Sons, Elderflower topped with Prosecco and splashed with soda. My date opted for a classic in the cocktail world; the Pornstar Martini.
Now to the food. With eyes bigger than our bellies we decided to go for a full three courses. Starting with crispy chili squid with aioli and Mac ‘n’ cheese balls with chipotle sauce to share. We had never tried mac ‘n’ cheese balls before but will now and forever continue to order them whenever we find them. They were absolutely scrumptious. Deep fried in a crispy coating that oozes with mac ‘n’ cheese goodness when you bite into it. Made all the more delicious by adding a smoky chipotle dipping sauce.
Before we placed the order for our main courses we were speaking (or shouting above the music) with our waitress who was explaining the ethos behind the food they serve and the suppliers they use. Greenwood work closely with artisanal and bespoke businesses, often family run, that have a passion for seasonal, sustainable and fully traceable British produce. We love this idea and are pleased to say that we are seeing it more and more throughout the restaurants in which we dine. After all, why wouldn’t you want to eat seasonal produce grown on your own doorstep, support local producers and help save the planet at the same time?
Deciding what to eat from the menu was very difficult. Do we go for pizza or burger? Fish or steak? The selection sounded so delectable that it took us a good 15 minutes to decide! Finally we settled on 2 options with the thought of coming back to try the others that didn’t make the cut this time round. I decided that Crispy buttermilk chicken with pickled chillies, Mexican cheddar and burnt corn would hit the spot and most definitely brighten my mood whereas my date decided to go for Teriyaki Salmon with broccoli, bean sprouts and red pepper. We also added and extra side of broccoli with chilli and almonds to try. The fish they use at Greenwood is sourced fresh from Brixham harbour so we knew that the salmon would be worth a try. It didn’t disappoint. Nor did the tasty chicken burger that was crisp and juicy at the same time. Strangely a highlight for us was the side of broccoli. Who would have thought that stems of broccolini with chilli and almonds could taste so damn good?! The lively atmosphere at Greenwood really did add to the dining experience so we highly recommend visiting on a Thursday night.
After eating (and drinking) so much we decided that we may need to be rolled home if we added dessert to the mix so be begrudgingly declined. A difficult thing to do considering the deliciousness of the menu. Triple layer chocolate fudge cake- we’ll be back to devour you another day!
Perfect for almost all occasions, Greenwood offers breakfast, brunch, bottomless brunch, dinner and a theatre menu.
