The Gendermenmarkt; home to cathedrals, monumental statues and a number of luxury hotels in Berlin. Devout chocolate lovers will already be in the know and thanks to our travel writer Rebekah Litherland, couples planning a trip to Berlin will now discover the unique destination located in the square; Fassbender & Rausch chocolatiers. Like Laduree is to Paris, Fassbender & Rausch is to Berlin and attracts a number of chocolate lovers from all over the world.
On the corner of a busy Mohrenstrabe sits what is quite possibly ‘heaven’ to chocoholics. With huge bay windows giving passers by a glimpse of what is spread out over the two floors, Fassbender & Rausch is impossible to walk past without popping in. You and your loved one will be lured in by the heavenly scent and once inside, you will find your eyes widening to the magnificent chocolate creations scattered around the ground floor. Sculptures of iconic Berlin architecture such as the Berlin TV Tower and Brandenburg Gate are just two of the many creations that have been sculpted from chocolate for visitors to admire. As you walk around, a number of counters containing assortments of chocolate treats will catch your eye. From fruit covered mouthwatering chocolates and brittles to the finest desserts and tortes that can be taken out or eaten in.
As you stroll the shop floor, you and your partner will notice a glass lift a la Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The lift will take you up to the first floor to a restaurant where you will be greeted by friendly waiters and waitresses that will cater to your needs. Exclusively open only during the week it is here that you will have the choice to enjoy desserts and drinks as part of the cafe service, or for those who want to taste a unique selection of entrées you can also enjoy the restaurant menu. However to do so, you will need to make a reservation which can easily be done via the website.
The cafe menu offers a number of divine desserts, some of which can be purchased in the shop if you and your partner cannot resist. Serving stands with chocolates, premium, extra chocolatey and speciality mini tortes offer a range of flavours and textures, leaving you and your partner with a tough decision of what to choose. For those who prefer something lighter and not as rich, the cafe offers light crème mini tortes and ice cream. To accompany the selection of desserts is a large drinks menu that features hot chocolates that you can customise; picking the chocolate, adding flavours and additional toppings such as cream. Tea, coffee, wine and soft drinks are also on the menu.
If you and your other half choose to indulge and sample the restaurant menu it will be sure to tantalise your taste-buds. Chocolate is incorporated into every meal in a way that is completely unexpected, but at the same time absolutely perfect. Whether it is drizzled over the food or mixed into sauces, it compliments the meal in an unheard of way, making the meal uniquely scrumptious. The presentation of the food is more like a work of art and in order to taste all of the flavours incorporated into the meal you will need to savour it. We should, on that note, point out that like the food, the service is sensational. Considering the food is freshly made, service is quick, ensuring you and your partner are not left waiting.
With the restaurant over looking The Gendermenmarkt, the two of you will enjoy the spectacular architectural views acting as a grand back drop. Depending on the time of year you will be able to watch the sunset over the many historical buildings.
A visit here is truly worthwhile.
