As you are probably aware, here at Hero & Leander we are in love with the United States. For us it isn’t so much about the animated Americans, the sprawling cities or the abundance of food (although we do love that too), but about so much more. The vast variety of breathtakingly beautiful scenery, the chance to see as far into the distance as the eye will allow and nature showcasing some of its very finest work is the reason we return year after year. After recently looking into the most astonishing holiday rentals around the world (read the article here, http://hero-and-leander.com/astonishing-holiday-rentals-around-the-world-part-i ) we stumbled across a place that we couldn’t pass up the chance of telling you about; Los Vados.

Los Vados Canyon House is unique in the Moab area of Utah: an elegant, intimate creekside home in the desert; a remote place of solitude with many of the comforts of home. A place where you can mountain bike, hike and explore petroglyphs, all on your doorstep. For couples seeking a more relaxing break away, simply unwind by the pool with a good book and a glass of wine.

Just 15 miles from the town of Moab, Utah, Los Vados Canyon House is next to a creek flowing year-round through a spectacular red rock canyon. Los Vados, “the crossings,” refers to the three creek fords required to reach this end-of-the-road retreat. If you have never experienced the magnificence of a red rock canyon then we cannot urge you strongly enough to visit. There are very few places that are so grand in scale that they literally take your breath away but the red rock canyons do just this. Due to the enormous scale of the vivid red rock formations, photographs never really capture the enormity of the place.

Los Vados Canyon House is an intimate 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom home surrounded by thousands of acres of untouched red rock cliffs and mesas; perfect for nature loving couples. The seven acres sit at the end of a canyon that contains only one other home – a mile away. No road goes through the Los Vados property, though a small herd of cattle amble through twice a year on their way to and from grazing land. Remote is the key word used to describe Los Vados and here at H&L we couldn’t think of anything more romantic. Los Vados is ten miles from the nearest fire station and completely “off the grid” in terms of utilities. It generates its own electricity through solar panels and has its own well. To reach Los Vados, you must pass through two locked ranch gates and cross Mill Creek, the only creek in the area running year-round. This (as well as the dirt road leading through the canyon) requires a 4-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle; but personally we don’t know why you would drive the back roads of the USA in anything else!

Los Vados Canyon house is intimate and beautifully created by its San Francisco-based designers. The simple exterior belies the comfort and elegance of the inside, with wide-plank wood floors, high ceilings and vast expanses of glass opening to cottonwood trees and red rock cliffs. While many accommodations in Moab cater to outdoor enthusiasts looking for a place in which to wheel their bikes and get some sleep before their next adventure, Los Vados is different in that most guests, once here, want to stay. The master bedroom has a queen sized bed, a dressing area, and a bathroom with a candle-lit soaking tub with incense and custom-mixed bath salts. Perfect for a couples wind down after a long day exploring. Alternatively, and for a small nightly fee to cover housekeeping, guests may sleep in a separate rustic tent cabin across the stream, which also accommodates two in a king size bed.

The house is oriented toward the year-round creek with a series of decks descending to its banks, where you can enjoy a cocktail or a meal or simply doze off in a hammock to the sound of running water. In the summer months, a small pool is a welcome sight after a day of hiking or bicycling.

The first thing that came to our minds when we found out about Los Vados is how incredible it would be to sit round an open fire and gaze at the star spangled sky; our idea of romance defined. In fact, the very idea and location of Los Vados is a dream destination for us and truly encapsulates a romantic off the grid experience. As lovers of the States we have now added Los Vados to our list.
