On Wednesday 7th September, Ask For Janice invite inquisitive foodies to learn about the intriguing art of urban foraging. Discover the local ingredients that can be found in unexpected locations across the capital.
A renowned wild food forager, Jason Irving, will lead the evening, giving expert tips on hunter-gathering in the city. To accompany the evening, bar manager Mags Karenova will present the freshest cocktails London has to offer. As if that wasn’t enough to tempt you, Ask For Janice head chef Laura will serve an array of inventive treats.
Jason acquired an extensive knowledge of edible plants through years of experience collecting, cooking and eating wild food. Throughout the evening, he will demonstrate that foraging is not solely a country pursuit – it’s possible in unexpected urban locations. The evening will offer Londoners an insight into the art of finding and cooking the hidden bounty of the London larder. Jason will allude to his favourite London foraging hotspots, educating guests on plant recognition. Even more importantly, he will teach guests how to incorporate them into everyday cooking.
Upon arrival, guests will receive the fragrant and tangy ‘Rosehip Bellini’ which showcases this underused autumnal ingredient. Jason will then introduce guests to a host of seasonal raw ingredients – including wood sorrel, sea purslane, Douglas fir and Hackney horseradish. Ask For Janice have devised a carefully crafted three course menu created with foraged vegetables, herbs and flowers. Recipe cards will be available to take away to encourage culinary experimentation at home.
Ask For Janice is a modern British all-day restaurant and bar that looks onto Smithfield’s Market. Drawing from its market roots, Ask For Janice is devoted to bringing a menu of wholesome dishes to the London table. The team regularly sets out on foraging trips to source seasonal ingredients for their simple and English retro inspired menu. The evening will take place in the newly refurbished basement bar and will be a curious foray in autumn’s finest foraged ingredients.
