To truly get beneath the skin of a country it is often best to head away from the tourist trail and into the neighbourhoods to meet with locals and experience everyday life. Shanghai is no different and this mega-metropolis has plenty of areas to explore all across the city which offer something for everyone.
Asia escorted group touring experts RT Holidays offer five China tours that feature Shanghai. Here is their round up of the top five areas to explore in the spectacular city of Shanghai.
No visit to Shanghai is complete without a walk along this thriving street. It is one of the world’s busiest shopping areas and leads down to the magnificent Bund waterfront, past high-end brands and Chinese department stores.
Moganshan Road aka M50
This large creative district is at the centre of Shanghai’s art scene and has an urban backdrop of restored factories and graffiti walls – perfect for budding photographers. More than a hundred artists open their studios to the public here and new and exciting exhibitions take place on a regular basis, meaning it is one of the best places to see free art in the city.
Located in the popular French Concession area, Ferguson Lane is an attractive yet quirky neighbourhood consisting of cafes, restaurants, galleries and trend-setting shops. Head here for a day of exploring and meander between cute coffee shops and funky cocktail bars.
Qibao Old Town
Escape the masses and head to the peaceful water town of Qibao, situated to the south-west of the city. This ancient neighbourhood’s history spans over one thousand years and offers museums, traditional architecture and fantastic street food.
This neighbourhood is known for its flourishing wholesale clothes market, but if the hustle and bustle gets too much turn off onto one of the many side streets for a glimpse into local life. The area is also home to the Shanghai Post Museum which was originally built in 1924 and is a must see for its European classical and baroque style architecture.
All of RT Holidays’ China tours include a guided tour of Shanghai’s famous Bund waterfront and the shopping boulevard of Nanjing Road, plus provide guests with a day at leisure to explore Shanghai in their own time.
