We spoke to Tom & Anna from the inspiring, Adventure In You to find out a little more about their lives…
Where/How did you meet?
We first met in Mui Ne, Vietnam. I was taking a go pro video while I was sand sledding down the sand dunes and from the corner of my eye, I saw Tom rolling down the sand dunes with no sled. He was just rolling down this hill having the time of his life. I even caught him on video as I chuckled to myself. Soon after that he came over to borrow my board and the rest was history. We met when I was at the tail end of a solo yearlong backpacking trip and Tom was about 7 months into his own trip.
We were in Hoi An, Vietnam when Tom asked me out on a date. When you’re traveling and you constantly meet people, you don’t really go out on dates as everyone sort of just hangs out. So I was a bit surprised when he asked me out. We went for a walk in the beautiful old heritage town of Hoi An and found a nice restaurant where we had a romantic meal on the restaurant balcony. After that, we strolled down to the local markets and bought these little floating candles which you are meant to set free in the river whilst making a wish. We lit our candles, made our wishes and slowly set them off the river but being my clumsy self, I accidentally tipped my floating candle off as soon as it hit the water. We both almost fell in the river as we were laughing so hard after that happened.
First trip away together?
We were in quite a unique situation as after we met, we both just decided to travel together, meeting up in some countries here and there. Ironically, I guess the first real trip we did together was when we decided to meet up again and travel through Thailand. We met up in Chiang Mai and went to Pai, this amazing little hippie village north of Thailand. We had a blast during our time there!
What inspired you to start ‘Adventure in You?
We were both feeling stuck going through the routines of life. At this time, Tom had moved to the Philippines and was working for a tech start-up company. We both missed the travel life so we decided to put up Adventure in You as a way to stay connected to something we loved. It was meant to be a side project but since then, we have both decided to give up our jobs and work on it full time, pursuing our passions and finding a way to earn a living by doing something we love. We recently wrote about our journey on how starting a blog changed our lives.
What has been your most exciting adventure together?
I think the most exciting adventure that we have gone on to date is when we decided that we were going to turn Adventure in You into a full blown company. This was a huge step for us and is something that we know we will fondly look back on. Since then, we received a small investment which we will be using to develop an App called Get Stoked and build our company.
Craziest thing you have ever done?
We like to do crazy things. From jumping out of an airplane when we went skydiving in Switzerland to swimming with sharks in Indonesia. We love trying things for the first time and testing out our limits.
Is settling down in one place ever an option for you?
Ironically, we have stopped traveling for a while now as we are basing ourselves in Chiang Mai, Thailand while we build our company. We decided to stay here because there is a really cool digital nomad scene-plus the cost of living is ridiculously cheap! The best part is Pai, the place where Tom and I first travelled is just a few hours away!
What is your favourite travel destination (so far) and why?
That is such a hard question because every place that we go to offers something new. I guess one destination that surprised us was Italy. We were in a small town called Bolzano where we spent our days hiking through the mountains. We couch surfed with a lovely family and the whole experience was just local and non touristy.
What has been your favourite hotel that you have ever stayed in?
Again that is quite hard as although we love the luxurious stays that we have in hotels, we also love the rugged outdoor experiences like when we went camping on an island in the Philippines. We had the whole island to ourselves and we fell asleep under the stars while sharing a bottle of rum. It was perfect. As for hotels though, one memorable one was our stay at Mandala Spa & Villas in Boracay Island. We had a private villa with a bathtub full of flowers as we entered. It was heaven!
What do you find so rewarding about travelling?
We love meeting new people and discovering new cultures. We like to go off the beaten path so rather than staying in hotels, we would first check out couch surfing to see if there are cool people in the area. This way, we get to discover a place through the eyes of a local. We love being able to reach out to a lot of people as we give advice, share our travel tips and experiences.
What is the most romantic thing you have ever done together and who is the most romantic?
Tom is admittedly the romantic person between us both. He once surprised me one Valentine’s Day by learning a Tagalog (my native tongue) song to serenade me with. But in our everyday life, we do small gestures for each other which I think is quite romantic like giving up the last bite of your favourite food even if you really want it to yourself.
Define your idea of romance?
To us, it’s great to be romantic and to surprise each other with big gestures, but more than that, romance is how you make the person feel each and every day. It’s how you communicate, how you respect the other person, and how much you value each other. Being able to laugh at anything and everything and to do things with each other without getting tired or sick of the other person. That to us is romance.
Ahhhh…we are big foodies so this is a tough one. We literally eat EVERYTHING.
Favourite restaurant in the world?
We had this magical meal in this small restaurant in Avignon, France. I can’t even remember the name of the place but the food was so good. I still dream about the meal we had there every now and then. The food, the wine, and the whole ambiance was perfect.
How would you describe yourselves as a couple?
We are big adventure junkies who are both very chilled out. We love doing fun stuff like hiking, canyoning, but at the same time, we also enjoy lazing around as we lie in a hammock with a good book.
What are your travel essentials?
Since we work online, we naturally carry our electronics with us wherever we go. Laptops, cameras, and a go pro. Aside from that, I always have a ziplock bag lying around. Trust me, they become so useful!
You obviously both love thrill seeking adventures, but who is the most adventurous out of the two of you?
I think Tom is. As I get older, the more cautious I am becoming. My parents would sigh heaps of relief when they hear that. Back when I was younger, I wouldn’t even bat an eyelid. Jump off a plane? Game. Waterfalls? I’m on my way. Nowadays, although I would still end up doing it, it just takes me a lot longer! Tom on the other hand has no fear which is one of the things I love about him.
What do you have planned next?
We’re on a mission to leave our mark in the travel industry…and eat as much Pad Thai as we can while we’re in Thailand.
What is your dream destination?
The Maldives, exploring more of South America, and an African Safari. God, I could go on and on.
To be happy, build our business, remain each other’s best friends and to continue pursuing our passions in life.
