Currently, guests staying at Francis Hotel, Bath; Castle Hotel, Windsor; and Queen’s Hotel, Cheltenham are able to choose their own scent to ensure that the memory of their stay continues with them, long after they have left the hotel’s grounds. The experience is bought together with MGallery by Sofitel and Lizzie Ostrom a renowned scent historian from Odette Toilette. What has been considered is the unique personalities and heritage of each hotel mixed with the great knowledge of 18th and 19th century perfume formulations that Lizzie brings, culminating in the fragrance collections. Lizzie has also written the book ‘Perfume: A Century of Scents, a cultural history of fragrance’.
“Smell” says Lizzie Ostrom, “is so often described as evocative, a trigger for buried memories and a poignant reminder of a place we once knew. Often we form these associations by accident. We don’t try to lay down a scent memory, rather it comes to us involuntarily”.
Not only does the guest’s chosen scent create a finishing touch for their room throughout their visit, but also a specially created cocktail and afternoon tea at the hotel. Delight in ingredients common to Victorian baking such as honey and orange delices, jasmine sponge cakes or orange blossom and almond cakes with nutmeg shortbread. With names such as the Beau Nash cocktail and Capillaire High Tea, you’ll be transported back to a fine era.
There are a total of 9 unique fragrances ensuring that there is sure to be one that you love. The fragrances draw on not only the hotel’s story but one of English heritage such as Bath’s evening culture of balls, assemblies and entertainment. If that doesn’t take your fancy, then perhaps the Queen’s Hotel’s ‘Reviving the Source of Her Heritage’ that brings back the fragrances enjoyed by the cognoscenti of the early 19th century, might tempt you.
“We are always looking for thoughtful ways to add to a guests’ MGallery by Sofitel experience. By using fragrances to showcase the unique stories of each individual property, we hope that the Sensory Storytelling experience will create long-lasting memories of each stay.” comments Inge Van Ooteghem, Senior Vice President of Upscale AccorHotels.
