Date night ideas sometimes run a little dry; even for us, with our proverbial fingers on the pulse on all things couple-worthy, adventurous, unique and memorable. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with making a table reservation at fancy new restaurant opening it can be good to do nothing at all. Here at H&L we rave about sharing mind-blowing plates of food, breath-taking views or beautiful journeys but despite this, we all agree that ‘doing nothing’ together is a something to treasure. We visited the Landmark London to do just that, inside their beautiful spa.
Taking in the grandeur of the 5* venue it became immediately clear to me that doing nothing could be a new dream career path for me. The prospect of spending hours within this venue pleased me to no end. The hotel’s opulent and beautiful ceilings proudly stretched above us, following us through each corridor as we walked towards the Spa and Health Club. Upon entering the sleek, modern spa the change in atmosphere was immediate; it was like tipping our heads through the door of a tent, completely hidden, delicately protected from the outside world. Together we signed the spa form which indicated how we currently felt (achy/tired) and how we would like to feel (energised- we both agreed). With this and an amused smile from the spa’s staff, we slipped into our beige fluffy robes and tip toed into the spa.
Spending a Monday morning at a luxury spa is good for the soul. The scent of the dry wood in the not-too-hot samarium, the soothing movement of the water in the pool, and our instinctive decision to avoid speaking much over 5 decibels felt so good. Whispering to each other from each corner of the spa, only daring a decibel louder when competing with the gentle rumble of the Jacuzzis bubbles or the rustle of magazines and slow page flipping sounds from the relaxation beds. Very, very soon began to feel a trillion miles away from tube tracks, cars and other people. Doing nothing hardly required effort – truly glorious.
Before our Afternoon Tea together in the Winter Garden, an enchanting dining area of the hotel, I shuffled off to indulge in a spa treatment. Already feeling thoroughly cleansed and calm, I entered the dimly lit treatment room to enjoy a chocolaty back exfoliation, massage and facial. The chocolaty scrub isn’t like products you have at home; it truly feel like someone has cracked a cacao pod in front of your nose, to extract creamy yet exfoliating goodness from within, to then generously apply it to your skin. Then, before I knew it, my back had been exfoliated and cleansed and I had a few moments to day dream about what would be for tea. My therapist worked in a number of serums and creams with gentle, stroking massage motions into the face as I did so. Bliss. The facial mask towards the end of the treatment includes a gauze soaked in toner, which is then laid over the face, with a face mask gently smoothed over on top. I loved that the treatment was completed with the therapist adding a little lip balm to your lips and a few dabs of perfume to the shoulders and neck – Afternoon Tea date ready.
Patiently waiting within the Winter Garden Room was my boyfriend, peering into the Afternoon Tea menu. Taking a moment to take in the memorable room, with its incredibly high glass ceilings, impressively tall palm trees, piano and loose tea station. I sat beside him, as a new woman with radiant, delicious skin.
I recommend the Angel Peach Tea, a delicately flavoured green tea, although admit it was a close call with any tea containing Peony petals – the only way to subtly remind him they are my absolute favourite. We savoured each sandwich, feeling smug that we had made it past lunchtime without actually ‘doing anything’. Cucumber and cream cheese always remains a favourite at afternoon tea but the chicken and walnut surprised us both – each of us knocking hands as we went to pinch the last one. The sweet desserts to follow are truly Instagram-worthy but so sweet for me. Whether I’m sweet enough, or not, the boyfriend scooped in to top up his levels of sugary sweetness. I don’t think I’ve seen that satisfied grin in a while.
Reschedule Friday date nights for Monday morning’s at the Landmark London Spa. If the incredibly tall palm trees in the Winter Garden don’t impress you (they will), nor the delicious chocolate-scented spa products (they will), then the uplifting, happy mood you’re both left with after a few hours most definitely will!
