Eat At: Wing Wing

Cold Beer, Hot Birds is how they define the offerings at the latest eatery in the capital – Wing Wing, the new chicken joint in London’s Russel Square, serving up fresh food inspired by Korean cuisine. So we had no expectations of what the food was going to be like and prior to turning up, all we’d heard was that this place had great chicken wings and that Koreans love the combo of chicken and beer. In fact, not only do they love it they’ve even created a word for it, Chi-maek, fusing the English word for chicken with the Korean word for beer, Maekju. So upon learning this, as avid fans of fried chicken, we were super excited to check out the crispy flavours. After a day at the press desk we headed over eagerly awaiting an ice cold beer. Well 4 seconds later, bam, there’s one in front of you that’s been poured with a unique system that fills the glass from the bottom up. We’re still not sure if there’s any real taste benefit to this method but it sure creates a talking point and a little creativity to the first pint of the evening. The pint glasses have a hole in the bottom that then gets plugged with a rubber seal once the glass is full. There’s then a little Korean cartoon smiling back at you as you sip your drink. If you fancy a deviation away from a cold beer that check out Wing Wing’s slush collection. Icy, fruity flavoursome recipes, such as the Ginger Beer slush which has a topping of ice cream! Mmmm.

Upon initial glances at the menu, the food is at a good price point. Not too costly, as it’s clearly a quick eat joint, but also not too cheap to reassure you that despite the fast service, this is a cut above your typical fast food establishment. The chicken wings come in various portion sizes depending on your hunger levels and with three main coatings, hot, soy garlic, liquorice – or a combo of all! Our favourite thing about the wings though – their crispiness. Yes the flavour is great, there’s no doubting that, but the crisp crunch of the coating really brings out the quality here. Too often fried chicken from restaurants is a little soggy and unappealing – not here at Wing Wing. The flavour and crunch packs a punch and definitely does wonders to upping brand ‘fried chicken’.

The decor and branding of Wing Wing is also on point. Bright eclectic colours are mixed with a light industrial feel to the restaurant, creating a funky fun atmosphere. Not only can you imagine coming here for dinner with just two of you, but also a group if you’re just heading out and need to grab some treats before the bars. In fact, groups are well catered for with bumper food packages that you can order for some great value feasts to share amongst friends.

So to sum up our experience; hands down the best chicken wings we’ve ever had in London. As they say, this flips the bird to all competition. We want to go back…
