Charlotte Durgeat & Jesson Vedel – The Interview
Where/How did you meet?
We met in Tahiti around Easter 2013 through mutual friends. Initially we met at a friend’s birthday and saw each other again a couple of times after that. From that we talked every day and found out we have a lot in common. Especially our centre of interests and a need for adventure and experiences.
What was your first date?
The first time we decided to do something together was about a week after we met. I lived in a small condo with my dog and I had a small car. So Jesson thought it’d be fun to take me and Sweet (my dog) in his truck and go explore the mountain and river of the Maroto. It’s a beautiful place with waterfalls, amazing lush scenery and away from the craziness of the city. Since, Sweet has been part of many fun days with us.
First trip away together?
Our first trip away together happened a couple of weeks after we started dating. It was in California. I had a photoshoot in Los Angeles, it was also Jesson’s birthday and he wanted to spend it with his son who lives in the US. It wasn’t a planned trip but we ended up spending most of the time together visiting and enjoying our first moments away together. We didn’t really realize it would lead to wanting to do it again so often.
What is your favourite travel destination and why?
At this point, all the places we have visited were amazing. Each country obviously has its own culture, people and way of life. That’s what we’re looking for. However, surfing in Bali was pretty awesome, the architecture in Santorini was amazing, the rich history of Athens was powerful, Paris and its monuments were magical, Australia has so much to offer, Barcelona was short but so much fun. At the moment we’re in Sayulita in Mexico and it’s such a cool town. Great food, colourful streets, great energy, fun waves.
But our favourite destination at the end of the day will always be home.
What has been your favourite hotel that you have ever stayed in together?
As far as best hotel… We usually travel on a budget and avoid anything fancy. We like homestays and little motels. We have family and friends all over the world, which makes it easy for accommodation. All we need is a place to sleep and leave our bags in. We’re never in our room during the day. We’d rather spend our money on a rental car and go and explore, get close to the local people and try to absorb as much as possible from the local lifestyle.
However we did stay in the Roosevelt hotel in Hollywood once and it was fun. More because it’s one of the places we partied with good friends when we first started dating. I was underage for drinking in the US and one of our friends came to get me, saying he knew a way to get me inside the bar by the pool. I thought he knew a manager maybe….but he made me go around the bouncer (who kicked me out a first time) through a small bamboo path. I made it in and the bouncer ended up looking at me straight in the eyes as I was holding my drink. He ended up being cool with it. We had so much fun that night, so we ended up staying in this hotel this year more because of the memories now that I’m 21+ than to stay in a “nice” hotel.
How has Instagram influenced your life?
If our lifestyle can be inspiring to some people, it’s awesome. We encourage people to enjoy life more than anything. But everything we do, we do it for us first. We love spending time together and having fun. We share some of it via social media for those who want to see it.
What inspires you to take photos?
Taking photos is part of what people do these days. Having a camera is more than accessible… So nothing too inspiring there. We visit cool places and do fun things. It builds memories to take photos, and now it’s easy and fun to share them.
Define your idea of romance?
We’re not really that romantic to be honest. We do spend a lot of time together and we love discovering new things together. We are a pretty enthusiastic couple. Whether it’s to go on a new adventure or stay home relaxing, we enjoy each other.
What is the most romantic thing you have ever done together?
I love how Jesson gets excited when I accomplish something like catching a fun wave, how he throws me out of a plane, how he pushes me to do things I never imagined or when he pranks me all the time. That’s my kind of romance. I think romance is a little bit of everyday when you’re with the right person.
Favourite place to eat in the world?
Did you say food?
We love food…
One of my favourite places to eat fish is actually in Bora Bora.. It’s called Matira Beach Restaurant.
Jesson loves and eats pretty much everything but anything Asian ( Thai, Viet, Japanese) will do.
How would you describe yourselves as a couple?
We are kind of Sporty, adventurous, thrill seekers I guess.
What do you have planned next?
We don’t have anything planned for the moment. We are focusing on our trip in Mexico right now, for Christmas and New Year. We have some work waiting for us at home, which will be our priority to start 2016.
What is your dream trip?
Jesson’s dream trip is spending some time in the Mentawais or any other surf destination like Central America. I have always dreamt to go to Russia since I was a little girl.
We’ll have to make these happen eventually …
