On Saturday 11th June World Gin Day will be in full swing with intriguing and exciting gin events taking place all around the globe. The popularity of this once seedy spirit is soaring and continuing to do so, no more so than in London. We have put together a list of our favourite gin-spiring events, cocktails and creations throughout the capital. Chin chin.
One-of-a-kind gin at Pollen Street Social destination gin bar
This Gin Day, the gin bar at Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social will be the only bar in the world serving Hoppy Gin, the latest creation from the pioneers at Audemus Spirits and the Michelin-starred establishment’s choice of gin of the month for June. Using an IPA from Paris-based brewers Deck & Donohue as the base, the gin will be served with a garnish of fresh passion fruit and sage to complement the tropical undertones. Guests can also explore the bar’s eclectic selection of 62 gins and 3 genevers from 13 countries curated by Bar Manager, Greg Almeida. Divided into 6 categories, unusual, citrus, floral, harmonious, juniper heavy, Old Tom and genever, guests can explore the collection through the bar’s selection of gin-based cocktails for a true celebration of this versatile spirit.
‘Dill or No Dill’ at The Blind Pig
In celebration of National Gin Day, guests at Jason Atherton’s, The Blind Pig, can enjoy one of the speakeasy style bar’s signature cocktails, ‘Dill or No Dill’; a well-balanced mix of Tanqueray gin, lemon juice, elderflower syrup, cucumber water and smoked salt, with a fragrant fresh dill garnish.
Gin cocktails with a Japanese twist at 7 Tales
This Gin Day, guests at Jason Atherton’s newly opened 7 Tales bar, located below Sosharu, can enjoy ‘Turnmills Rice Wine’ an inventive blend of Beefeater gin washed in rice, Cocchi Americano and sesame, for a gin-based cocktail with a Japanese twist.
Gin-based floral cocktails at German Gymnasium
This summer, guests at German Gymnasium can enjoy the light and citrus ‘Ikebana’ cocktail. Based on the Japanese art of flower arranging, the ‘Ikebana’ blends Tanqueray 10, elderflower cordial, matcha and lemon juice and is garnished with a single, edible orchid. The cocktail will be specially priced during ‘Flower Hour’, every weekday from 5pm – 7pm at £7.
‘Eau de Vetiver’ at Pollen Street Social
This Gin Day, guests at Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social can enjoy the gin-based ‘Eau de Vetiver’ cocktail, inspired by Jason Atherton’s signature fragrance. A carefully balanced mix of The Botanist gin, Pollen Street Social chenin blanc, cardamom, elderflower, wood, basil & pepper.
Jungle book inspired gin cocktails at Old Bengal Bar
To celebrate Gin Day, guests at Old Bengal Bar’s ‘Jungle Book Terrace’ can enjoy the aptly named ‘Mowgli’ cocktail. A light and fruity mix ofTanqueray Gin, Yellow Chartreuse, Vida Mezcal, pineapple juice, elderflower cordial, lemon juice and thyme and is garnished with edible flowers. The cocktail will be specially priced during ‘Flower Hour’, every weekday from 5pm – 7pm at £7.
‘Pea & Tea’ with a view at City Social bar
To celebrate Gin Day, guests at the bar at Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred City Social can enjoy the fresh and floral ‘Pea & Tea’ cocktail. Blending Ford’s gin infused with sugar snap peas, lime juice, electric chamomile tea syrup and topped with tonic water, the ‘Pea & Tea’ is garnished with pea shoots & seasonal flowers for an ode to the beauty of British gardens and a true celebration of gin.
National Gin Day at The Distillery
On the site of Stevenson & Howell’s Standard Works, a renowned essence factory in 1800s, The Distillery stocks over 50 hand-picked gins, from fine old classics including vintage White Satin and Lassy Dry Gin which was discontinued back in the 70s, to new age gins from artisan distilleries springing up all over Bankside, Southwark and Bermondsey. With a gin menu divided into 11 categories, settle down at The Distillery this National gin Day with The Perfect G&T from local distillers at Little Bird Gin and Jensen’s Bermondsey, or sample a gin from their global collection, including Monkey from Germany which contains 47 botanicals.
Tanqueray Gin taking over Coq d’Argent’s terraces this summer
This summer, Tanqueray Gin is taking over Coq d’Argent rooftop terrace with wonderful herbal and spice infused concoctions such as Cardamom Martini, Eucalyptus Collins, BlossomTini and Camomile Sour which accompany a three course floral menu, designed by Executive Chef Damien Rigollet.
Rock Rose gin jelly at Plum + Spilt Milk
Gin-lovers of the world rejoice for Plum + Spilt Milk have created a special dessert in honour of this year’s World Gin Day. Chef Director Mark Sargeant has used Rock Rose gin to form a Rock Rose gin, lemon and elderflower jelly (£9). Made by the Scottish Dunnet Bay Distillers, Rock Rose gin gets its wonderful flavour from a carefully selected and put together creation of local and traditional botanicals. Known for the quality of its seasonal British dishes, Plum + Spilt Milk is situated inside the Great Northern Hotel and overlooks King’s Cross Square.
Graphic Bar- Gin Social
Graphic Bar- Gin Off is once again gathering together gin experts for the biggest gin competition London has to offer. Graphic’s Gin Off educates, engages and involves members of the public and drinks experts alike. After seeing the likes of Whitley Neill, Boxer and East LDN Liquor Co battle it out in the first and second round, Gin Off returns for Round 3 on June 20th with Ungava, Silent Pool, Pink Pepper, Hayman’s competing for the coveted trophy. The rules of the competition are simple, each brand is tasked with creating a bespoke cocktail for the competition. On arrival each guest is given a polling card entitling them to sample each of the 4 cocktails on offer, guests then vote for their favourite cocktail, the votes are counted and the top two brands with the highest votes progress to the quarter finals.
