Everybody loves a good ol’ mystical story from the Caribbean and the high seas. Films such as Pirates of the Caribbean have brought Hollywood glamour to these parts and now the world of drinks is getting in on the action. Welcome, The Duppy Share. A new and exciting rum brand from Jessica Swinfen and George Frost that is making promising gains in the world of rum.

A little background into the great name, Duppies are dark Caribbean spirits that originate from Jamaica and live at the base of cotton trees. They have a particular penchant for Rum. Through the process of rum aging a certain amount is lost to the atmosphere. It is this small amount, this best share that the duppies search out. They take only the best, that is The Duppy Share.

Hero & Leander were asked to attend an exciting event that The Duppy Share are hosting throughout the summer at pubs across the capital (see the event calendar below). A class to create a blend of rum that’s perfect to what you want from your drink. The event took place at the Fellows pub in Kings Cross where we had a private room on the top floor. After introductions and a quick rum punch cocktail with some canapés we were ready to learn all that there was to know about this delicious drink.

We divided ourselves into teams of 3 and came up with a name – RUM DMC, to take on a quick history game. Fortunately we’d picked our team wisely, for we had Rumcask on our side. Surely now, with rum aficionados on our side we would steal the limelight. Nothing like history classes that you’ve ever experienced it was really interesting, but we’ll leave the facts open for you to discover on your own trip.

The Duppy Share rum itself is a blend made from premium rums originating in both Jamaica and Barbados. Something Jessica says people were perplexed by initially, as it’s not the typical approach. However it’s certainly won people over and we thought it was excellent. It has a good rich flavor with subtle fruit flavourings and can definitely be sampled straight or with a dash of water. It’s not too overpowering like some spirits can be.

We were taught how to use a tasting map and through the evening sample a Jamaica, Barbados, Navy and White rum. They are four wildly different rums that all have different attributes. Selecting our favourite points of the individual drinks such as colour and oakiness, we get to work on our blend to replicate the best characteristics. Again we’ll stop it there though so we don’t spoil too much of the experience. The evening is concluded by bottling and naming. Ladies and gentlemen please meet the latest additions to the rum world – ‘Polly Want A Cracker’ and ‘Captain Smooth’. The Duppy Share may have some competition if we take these to market!

We left The Fellows with our newly mixed rums and knew that the weekend ahead would be comprised of coming up with delicious cocktail recipes! The whole experience is one that would make a great evening out with your other half, with some friends and to meet new people. Who doesn’t like a chat over a drink, especially if you’re actually making the drink!
